About Ulundanu Batur Temple
The Indonesian name of the temple (Pura Segara Ulun Danu Batur) means ‘water temple on Batur lake’. The temple is committed to Dewi Batari Ulun Danu, goddess of lakes and waterways. Segara Ulun Danu Batur Temple sits on the edge of Lake Batur, near another temple called Pura Jati, and it has epic views of the mountains in the background.
It features around 9 smaller temples within its complex, comprising over 200 different shrines and pavilions. The temple complex’s current site was established in 1926, following relocations from its original site at the foot of the volcano. Mount Batur’s eruptions in 1917 and 1921 saw flowing lava damaging the former site.
